Signs of a Haunted House & Other Places | Space Clearing |

Haunted HouseYou hear heavy footsteps in the upstairs hallway when you know no one is up there. Doors slam unaccountably. Commonly-used items disappear and reappear without cause. The kitchen light turns on by itself. There’s the unmistakable scent of a strange perfume in the air. A persistent rapping echoes in the walls. Are these phenomena explainable by natural events, or could your house be haunted?

True hauntings are rare occurrences, and it can be difficult to determine whether or not any strange activities in your home are due to a haunting.

For one thing, theories on what ghosts are and what a”real” haunting is—what causes it or why it starts—vary wildly. But if you are looking for reassurance (or confirmation of your fears), the typical signs of a haunting detailed below may help you determine whether or not you truly have a legitimate case of a haunting.

Typical Signs of a Haunting

Not all hauntings are alike, and they may exhibit a variety of phenomena. Some hauntings feature a single phenomenon—such as a particular door slamming shut that occurs repeatedly—while others consist of many different phenomena, ranging from odd noises to full-blown apparitions.

Here’s a partial list of phenomena that might indicate that your house is haunted:

  • Unexplained noises – Footsteps; knocks, banging, rapping; scratching sounds; sounds of something being dropped. Sometimes these noises can be subtle and other times they can be quite loud.
  • Doors, cabinets and cupboards opening and closing – Most often, these phenomena are not seen directly. The experiencer either hears the the doors opening and closing (homeowners know quite well the distinctive sounds their houses make) or the experiencer will return to a room to find a door open or closed when they are certain that it was left in the opposite position. Sometimes furniture, like kitchen chairs, seem to have been moved. Very rarely will the experiencer actually witness the phenomenon taking place.
  • Lights turning off and on – Likewise, these events are seldom experienced as they occur. Rather, the lights are switched on or off when the experiencer knows they were not left that way. This can also happen with TVs, radios and other electrically powered items.
  • Items disappearing and reappearing – This is known as the Disappearing Object Phenomenon (DOP) “the DOPler Effect” (DOP = Disappearing Object Phenomenon) or “the borrowers” phenomenon, and it’s the familiar experience of not being able to find a regularly used item—say, your set of car keys—which you believe you placed in a spot you routinely place them. But they’re gone and you look high and low for them with no success. Some time later, the keys are found—in exactly the place you normally put them. It’s as if the object was borrowed by someone or something for a short time, then returned. Sometimes they are not returned for days or even weeks, but when they are, it’s in an obvious place that should not have been missed by even a casual search.
  • Unexplained shadows – The sighting of fleeting shapes and shadows, usually seen out of the corner of the eye. This phenomenon has also been discussed in some detail in “Shadow People.” Many times, the shadows have vaguely human forms, while other times they are less distinguishable or smaller.
Strange animal behavior – A dog, cat or other pet behaves strangely. Dogs may bark at something unseen, cower without apparent reason or refuse to enter a room they normally do. Cats may seem to be “watching” something cross a room. Animals have sharper senses than humans, and many researchers think their psychic abilities might be more finely tuned also. (See “Animals and Ghosts” )
  • Feelings of being watched – This is not an uncommon feeling and can be attributed to many things, but it could have a paranormal source if the feeling consistently occurs in a particular part of the house at a particular time.

These are some of the most common experiences of those who think their houses are haunted. Yet even stranger things can happen…

Strong Evidence of a Haunting

The following phenomena are more rare, but could be stronger evidence of a haunting:

  • Mild psychokinetic phenomena – Hearing a door open or close is one thing. Actually seeing it happen is quite another. Similarly, actually seeing a light go on or off by itself is greater proof that something unexplained is happening. Do you see the TV or radio turn on? Or perhaps you’re present when a child’s powered toy begins to operate on its own. Doors and windows are locked or unlocked. Some people report that when they are in bed they can feel and/or hear something sitting on the bed.
  • Feelings of being touched – The feeling of being watched is one thing, but actually feeling a touch is truly unsettling. Some people feel something brush past them, something touching their hair or “a hand” on the shoulder. Some feel a gentle poke, push or nudge.
  • Cries and whispers – On occasion, muffled voices, whispering and crying can be heard. Sometimes it’s music from some unknown source. People hear their names being said. This phenomenon, as is true for the one above, gains more credibility if more than one person hears or sees the same thing at the same time.
  • Cold or hot spots – Cold spots are classic haunting symptoms; any instance of a noticeable variance in temperature without a discernible cause could be evidence.
  • Unexplained smells – The distinct fragrance of a perfume or cologne that you do not have in your house can indicate a supernatural presence. This phenomenon may come and go without any apparent cause, and may accompany other phenomena, such as shadows, voices or psychokinetic phenomena. The odor may be pleasant or foul.

Extreme or Poltergeist Phenomena

Rarer still are more extreme phenomena, some of which have been called poltergeist phenomena, and can be quite strong evidence of a true haunting.

  • Moving or levitating objects (severe psychokinetic phenomena) – Dinner plates sliding across the table; pictures flying off walls; doors slamming shut with great force; furniture sliding across the floor.
  • Physical assault – Scratches, slaps and hard shoves. This kind of personal assault is extremely rare, but obviously highly disturbing.
  • Other physical evidence – Unexplained writing on paper or walls; handprints and footprints.
  • Apparitions – Physical manifestation of a spirit or entity. These phenomena are also very rare and can take many forms: human-shaped mists or forming mists of some indistinguishable shape; transparent human forms that disappear quickly; and most rarely, human forms that look as real and solid as any living person, but that disappear into a room or even while being viewed.

Is Your House Haunted?

All over the world, today and throughout human history, an invisible spirit world intermingles with the everyday lives of people. Stories of ghostly visitations abound in folklore, history books, the Bible, literature, and even biographies of great historic figures. Ghosts can be wanderers, or closely associated with certain places or buildings. Countless haunted buildings are not so famous. They’re actually quite common.

Do you live in a haunted house and not even know it? Check for these signs:

  • Mysterious knocks and raps.
  • Unexplained electrical disturbances such as lights flickering or televisions and radios turning themselves on and off.
  • Strange animal behavior, i.e., dogs barking into an empty corner or cats eyes following something invisible around the room.
  • Being touched by invisible hands.
  • While in bed, feeling your mattress or blanket compress as if someone sat on it.
  • Hearing someone call your name.
  • Evocative smells, especially associated with someone who’s dead, i.e., perfume or cigars.
  • Seeing people out of the corner of your eye who disappear when you turn to look.
  • Feeling cold chills, sometimes followed by headaches or sudden exhaustion.

These signs can occur at any time of day or intermittently. Why would a ghost want to hang around, anyway? Sometimes a recently departed relative will just want to make sure everyone’s okay, or join in on a special family celebration such as a wedding or birth of a baby. Here are some other reasons:

  • To give a sign that they are okay. But sometimes these signs unintentionally frighten the living.
  • Ignorance. They don’t know they’re dead or where to go.
  • Confusion. Often the spirit was emotionally or mentally unbalanced in life.
  • Fear, usually of going to hell.
  • Strong emotional attachment to people or places.
  • Addictions to alcohol, drugs, etc.
  • Wanting to finish something started in life.
  • Revenge. Watch out!

And so, what if your house is haunted? What can you do? Some people choose to not do anything, especially if the ghost doesn’t keep them up at night or get in the way. But what if it does? The best choice for the inexperienced is to call a reputable psychic medium. But if you’re open minded and want to tackle the job yourself, here are a few tips:

  • Fortify your aura by invoking the presence of higher beings (Jesus, Krishna, Angels etc). This will protect you from becoming possessed, a fairly common occurrence. Ask the higher beings to assist in the releasement.
  • Never do this work when tired or ill. Your aura may be too weak to be effective.
  • Treat ghosts respectfully as you would a living person.
  • Think of them as people who are lost and need directions home. Don’t be overly forceful.
  • Speak to the ghost out loud or in your mind. Tell them that they are dead and ask them to look for their loved ones in spirit as well as the higher beings who will guide them to their new home. (Sometimes the ghost may frighten you while doing this, at that instance just stop doing this and  start chanting any powerful mantra)

If this doesn’t work, call in the experts. This work sometimes requires patience and a sense of humor. A ghost followed me home once from a client’s haunted house. For two nights I was kept awake by footsteps and raps on my ceiling, and several times heard my name called out loud. Fortunately, it then disappeared for good.

negative energies affects pets

Effects Of Spirits On Pets, Animals, Dogs, Cats, Rabbits etc

Can pets see ghosts? Dogs, cats, rabbits? Turtles?

It’s an interesting question, and while it remains unclear whether or not ghosts actually exist, many people do believe that animals’ exceptional senses allow them to see anomalous activity that we humans cannot. There are even some alleged “signs” that our pets can, in fact, see ghosts.

Are you scared that something is hurting your pets? Is your house haunted? If you answered ‘yes’ to these questions, then it is likely that you need some serious help.

Hauntings can come about in many ways. Spirits can be invited in your home, they can follow you, or they can already be there when you move in.

Usually if you are haunted, then you know it. You don’t need me to tell you. Odd things will happen around you. Objects move on their own. Out of the blue, you’ll hear pounding on the walls that makes you jump. Sometimes you catch a glimpse of an apparition floating down the hall. A whispering voice calls your name when no one is there. You find yourself having strange dreams. Sometimes a spirit will touch you.

If you are haunted, you’ll feel like someone is in your home when no one is with you. You see the strangest things when you are fully awake. Others experience it too, so you know you are not hallucinating. Weird happenings go on right in front of you, as plain as day. You know you are not crazy. Still you question if your imagination is working overtime.

The paranormal occurrences can be scary enough, but what happens when the haunting starts to impact your animals? Your pets are your heart and soul, and you love them completely. Pets are family. Your bond with them will never be broken. So when bad thing begin to happen to your pets, your heart can nearly stop.

It is easy to see when your animals are experiencing something otherworldly. Beyond your own experiences, your pets will react to something invisible in the room. Sometimes they chase after it, full force. I’ve had cases where dogs and cats will run after a phantom and smack into the wall as they try to follow. Of course they injure themselves when this happens, and people wonder if the spirit was taunting their pet to make that happen.

As time goes on, you’ll notice that your animals become stressed. They may refuse to go into certain rooms and hiss or bark at seemingly nothing. Basically they see something that you don’t. Any animal can see a spirit, but it is much more profound when a haunting is dark. The activity frazzles your pets’ nerves, and very often, the animals who are targeted will suddenly become lethargic. They won’t eat. They won’t play. It is as if they are not the same anymore. You will find yourself in and out of veterinary clinics, but the vets find nothing wrong with the animals. Your pets shouldn’t be sick, but they get worse and worse. No matter how hard you try, your beloved pet begins slipping away. It doesn’t matter which animal it is. I’ve seen cases where horses, birds, bunnies, cats, dogs, ferrets, and even reptiles die mysteriously once a bad haunting begins. The deaths can’t be explained rationally. Worse yet, there are people with demonic paranormal activity who lost one pet this way and then shortly after, another pet died the same way (without explanation). There are no gas leaks, toxic molds, or any environmental factors which could have caused the deaths. The animals just die, one by one.

When this happens, you feel sick to your stomach because you know something supernatural is going on. But who will believe you???? Too often people with real paranormal stories are blown off or used by the media. Though our world is slowly becoming more accepting of ghostly happenings, progress is slow. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t people out there who do understand. I understand. And there are many paranormal investigators who understand too.

Please know that evil targets animals because animals are so sensitive. They make easy prey. Plus, targeting your pet is a way to hurt you. If the spirit takes away what you love, it can rip your life apart with ease. This makes it simple for an evil entity to get to you and ruin your life. Dark spirits want to break you down, physically and emotionally. Just like some rotten people, evil spirits want to watch the world burn. When the spirits are finished with your animals, then they come for you.

If you believe you are truly haunted and that your pets are in danger, then by all means, reach out to a local paranormal group. Ask questions before you bring them to your home to make sure they will follow through after an investigation to ensure your safety. Investigators can help determine what is going on in your home and point you to more resources if necessary. They can lead you step by step through the process.

A word of caution though. I’ve seen a pattern over and over. When people with dark spirit activity bring in outside help, it can make things worse……at least for a little while. You need to understand that dealing with evil is not simple. It can take a lot of time to get what you need. There have been situations where a blessing and/or cleansing was done, and activity seemed to stop. Those involved felt as if they had control over their lives again. However, it was all a lie, and the ‘peace’ didn’t last long. It was all a trick, meant to lure them into letting their guard down.

It is at this point where evil digs in, and all hell breaks loose. Paranormal activity ramps up. So you must be sure to find experienced investigators to help you. Make sure that you get the right paranormal group. Get references and check to ensure that the group has dealt with your type of haunting. Don’t be afraid to ask questions because any reputable investigators will be open and honest about their experiences. They will understand your hesitance.

While it can be scary to think that getting help can make things worse for a while, it can be crucial to involve a good paranormal investigative group. They can be a lifeline in more ways than one. They can show you that you are not crazy and that something really is going on. They can identify what you are dealing with and steer you in the right direction to find resolution. A good group will know what to do if activity increases after their investigation. They will be able to guide you to whatever resources you may need and follow up with you.

The key is not to give up. If you are dealing with a negative haunting, remember that you are not alone. Many people will understand and do their best to help you. Learn all you can about spirit matters and have faith that it will be resolved. A positive belief can truly help you.
